Why so many Indian students are going abroad to study medicine?

In the recent Ukraine – Russia conflict we saw many Indian students being evacuated. Suddenly India got to know that there were almost 18000 Indian students were studying in medical colleges of Ukraine. Although it’s being debated if the Indian government has done what was needed for the students or not, it is not the thing about which we should be much concerned. We have seen that even so-called developed western countries could do nothing. They left their citizen to fend for themselves.
The main question for Indians should be why so many Indian students go abroad for studies. Is it just for the status symbol? No, it’s not the main reason. The actual reason is that we are not discussing the lack of seats in Indian medical colleges. We have just a handful of medical, dental, and nursing colleges, due to which our students have to go abroad if they want to study medicine. The question should be why medical education is so expensive and seats in such colleges so few?
